Hormone replacement treatment and skin aging

Skin aging is the result of the combined effect of age, genetics, sun damage, and hormones (oestrogen deficiency after the menopause). We wondered if HRT had any benefits for treating wrinkles, dry skin, rough skin, saggy or hair loss.

Some experiments have shown HRT is beneficial for the amount or activity of fibroblasts, hyaluronic acid and collagen in the skin, while some research showed oestrogen treatment makes skin thicker and increases the amount of collagen for post menopausal women. This means that HRT could be used to treat skin wrinkles and aging along with dry hair and skin. Hot flushes are also allieviated. Skin thickness increases by 10 to 20%, especially in the area where it is applied and in the areas not exposed to sunlight. HRT also prevents the masculinization of hair on the face. It can therefore be used to treat skin aging as well as oestrogen deficiency.
