[an error occurred while processing this directive] Comparing Erbium Yag Lasers and CO2 lasers. Are you interested in laser treatment for a permanent solution to cosmetic problems such as lines and wrinkles or skin discoloration? Erbium Yag Laser light is easily absorbed in water and so the depth to which it penetrates human tissue is self-limiting - presumably because of the high water content in cells. The Er Yag laser has a reputation for being precise and less aggressive than the CO2 laser - though the results achieved by both types of lasers in wrinkle treatment might very well be the same. The CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser has a reputation for producing greater skin tightening and less bleeding then the Er Yag laser, although the ER Yag laser probably has less risk of causing permanent loss of skin pigmentation. This might be related to the fact the Er Yag laser is generally not used to create as deep a resurfacing treatment as the CO2 Laser. If you are going to use am Erbium YAG laser, it might be best to use
The Derma-K and the Contour Er YAG laser according to Department
of Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery and Laser Center, UCSF, San Francisco,
California.
We normally think of the Carbon Dioxide laser as quite aggressive and the Er YAG laser as quite gentle. We wanted to compare results from both lasers on 13 people with facial wrinkles round their mouths and eyes so we treated one side of their faces with a pulsed CO2 laser and the other sides of their faces with an Er:YAG laser. We treated the skin behind their ears exactly the same way as the skin we were studying, and we took small samples to look at under a microscope before, after and 3 or 6 months after treatment to see how deep the resurfacing went and how much fibrous tissue the treatment caused. We took photographs at these times too and also at 6 weeks afterwards. Nine physicians checked the photographs for redness, discoloration and wrinkle improvement. The results showed no difference between the two lasers except the CO2 laser had less redness at two weeks after the treatment although by 6 weeks both laser treatments were the same again."
Combining the two lasers on the same area produced interesting results.. Combined erbium:YAG and carbon dioxide laser skin resurfacing "Patients preferred the combined protocol. Combining these 2 lasers is a safe and patient-friendly alternative to using only the carbon dioxide [CO2] laser."
How people felt about the results of their laser skin resurfacing - a followup study.. A prospective survey of patient experiences after laser skin resurfacing"Patients undergoing LSR to treat acne scarring were as satisfied as patients treated for photodamage".
Er Yag lasers used for hands, arms and necks.. Erbium:YAG laser resurfacing of the hands, arms, and neck. Results are mild to moderately successful - not as good results as on facial skin. Reasonably safe, but healing times are longer.
ER YAG Lasers can also be used for.. Beckers Naevus removal (large brown birthmark usually seen in men).. Becker's naevus: a comparative study. The Er Yag laser proved to be the best of two different lasers used. Epidermal naevi treated with pulsed erbium:YAG laser "The erbium:YAG laser is therefore an effective treatment for relatively nonverrucous or papular epidermal naevi."
Ear surgery for otosclerosis.. The Erbium-Yag laser in stapes surgery
Removing epulis lesions.. Removal of hyperplastic lesions of the oral cavity. although the CO2 laser was judged to be better for this.
Skin lesion removal..
Treatment for dark gums using a defocussed laser.. Gingival depigmentation by erbium:YAG laser
Er Yag Laser treatment for scarring in people with cleft lips.. Treatment of scars with Er:YAG laser in patients with cleft lip
Rhinophyma treatment (also called 'bulbous nose' or 'phymatous rosacea') by Er Yag laser.. Usually a CO2 laser is used for Rhinophyma treatment, though the Erb Yag laser seems to lead to successful outcomes too.
